Description

Jackson State University, an NCAA Division I member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and one of the leading institutions of higher education in the region is accepting applications for the position of Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor will serve as a member of the academic staff and reports to the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics. The Academic Advisor will be charged with coordinating programs to ensure compliance with all University, Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations governing the intercollegiate athletics program.

Examples of Duties

Specific duties and responsibilities associated with this position shall include, but are not limited to:
  • Serving as a liaison to all sports for all academic-related issues.
  • Performing research and providing interpretations of rules, regulations, and policies to both internal and external constituents.
  • Staying up-to-date on current trends and legislation in the industry and communicating this information to the appropriate constituents.
  • Researching and preparing violations academic reports, waivers, and appeals.
  • Monitoring progress toward degree requirements of student-athletes pursuant to NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Assisting with eligibility certification for all sports in coordination with compliance support staff.
  • Providing academic advising to student-athletes.
  • Assisting with enrollment procedures.
  • Assisting with the admissions and orientation process.
  • Working with faculty and coaches, as needed, to monitor class attendance and study hall attendance.
  • Monitoring academic performance and progress towards the degree.
  • Developing academic status reports for coaches and administrators.
  • Maintaining student academic files.
  • Tracking NCAA academic eligibility of students.
  • Evaluating transcripts of incoming transfer students and determining if they meet their NCAA
    eligibility requirement prior to their enrollment into the institution.
  • Creating detailed academic reports at the end of each academic semester summarizing the performance of all student-athletes of the University.

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required; a Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of one to three (1-3) years of work experience is required.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under time-sensitive deadlines
