Description

The Intercollegiate Athletics Department is currently searching for an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach. This position will be answerable to the Head Coach and Director of Athletics, and should adhere to the SIUE Principles Governing Athletics. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the objectives and goals of the athletics program by assisting the Head Coach in various areas of responsibility, including organizing practices, recruitment, team travel, fundraising, and other duties assigned by the Head Coach or Director of Athletics. The successful candidate will be in compliance with University, Conference, and NCAA Division I rules and regulations. Additionally, the individual will be expected to work collaboratively and responsibly with other departmental personnel, demonstrate concern for the health, safety, and welfare of each student-athlete, and support the student-athlete concept. Duties beyond the above-mentioned responsibilities may also be assigned. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • On-court coaching/player development: Develops individual player’s skills based on physical and mental needs of the player as well as position-specific skills.  Monitor player development and design practice techniques to improve athlete's fundamental skills.  Works with athletic trainer and strength coach to develop player-specific drills and exercises.
  • Assesses talent based on fit with team needs for the present and for 2-3 years into future. Scout prospective talent at games and key tournaments to evaluate player's skills and abilities. Recommends scholarships.
  • Scouts opponents to determine strengths and weaknesses. Develops game strategy based on competitive analysis of opponents. Evaluates game films or scouting reports in order to develop game strategy
  • Manages aspects of camps and clinics on as-needed basis as determined by the Head Coach.
  • Assists with team travel and manages logistics including meals, travel arrangements, meeting rooms, warm up time and playing time based on knowledge of coach’s objectives. Negotiates pricing for all travel including complementary rooms and upgrades. Plans and arranges all meals. Develops team itineraries to meet coaching needs, facility availability and budgetary guidelines.
  • Locates and arranges for community outreach opportunities.   Arranges for transportation to community activities. Monitors player activities to insure required hours are achieved.
  • Meets with individual players to discuss academic progress & to establish or monitor study table time if necessary. Meets with academic advisors to discuss academic progress of individual players; works with advisor to develop plans to address deficiencies. Follows up with players to insure class schedule is appropriate and that academic progress is being accomplished.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. Bachelor's Degree Evidence of sound organizational and communication skills  
  2. Ability to interact effectively with student-athletes, colleagues, and the public  
  3. Four years collegiate playing experience or combined collegiate and professional playing experience totaling 4 years 
  4. Two seasons of coaching experience (this includes graduate assistantships or volunteer coaching positions based on NCAA guidelines)

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master's Degree 
  • NCAA Division I experience 
  • Knowledge of University, Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
