Position Summary & Description

The Department of Athletics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applications for a full time, non-teaching, temporary 9 month faculty position of Assistant Athletic Trainer.
  
The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) is an individual who is highly skilled and educated in the prevention, assessment, care, and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries and illnesses.  The Certified Athletic Trainer is not only concerned with the optimum performance of the student-athlete, but more importantly, the overall, long-term health of the student-athlete.  The combination of these skills, education, and concerns renders the ATC uniquely qualified in the management of athletic related injuries and illnesses of Indiana University of Pennsylvania varsity student-athletes.
 
The position will be primarily assigned to the sports of Women’s Soccer, Baseball, Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Swimming.  Other sport assignments will be at the discretion of the Athletic Director based on experience.

Duties: 

  • Assist the Team Physician(s) in the medical care of varsity student-athletes including injury and illness prevention, assessment, treatment, care, rehabilitation, and functional return to activity. 
  • Provide athletic training services for the IUP Athletic Teams as assigned by the Director of Athletics. 
  • Coordinate, schedule, and assist in the completion of pre-participation physical examinations and the review of medical histories of varsity student-athletes. 
  • Provide athletic training services and medical coverage for practices and competitions.
  • Maintain documentation of student-athlete injuries including: evaluations, daily treatment summaries, daily rehabilitation updates, and participation status.
  • Serve as liaison between the student-athlete, coach, parent/guardian, and physician in regard to physical, mental, or emotional impairments.
  • Serve as a liaison between the student-athlete and the Director of Athletics and the Director of Compliance in order to maintain student-athlete welfare.
  • Aid in the development and maintenance of the Department’s Athletic Training Service operations budget and inventory.
  • Responsible for daily operation of the IUP Athletic Training Room.  
  • Provide assistance in the selection of and supervision of the professional staff, along with the professional development and continued education of the professional staff.
  • Develop and implement education programs for professional growth of all athletic department staff and student-athletes.
  • Administration of athletic injury claims and medical provider payments regarding injuries incurred by varsity student-athletes in assigned athletic programs.
  • Function as a liaison between the student-athlete, parent/guardian, medical service provider, student-athletes primary insurance company, and Athletics Department insurance provider.
  • Serve as liaison with the campus health center.  Particularly in the scheduling of student-athlete pre-participation physical exams at the health center.  
  • Serve as liaison with Nutrition Department/Sports Nutrition.  Assist in scheduling team presentations/education and individual nutrition counseling.
  • Serve as liaison with the IUP Counseling Center regarding the mental healthcare of IUP student-athletes.
  • Aid in the coordination of first aid coverage for summer camps hosted by IUP Varsity Athletic Programs.
  • Other duties as outlined by the Director of Athletics.

Position Qualifications

Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Athletic Training Certification through the Board of Certification.
  • Current state athletic training licensure from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or eligible for athletic training licensure from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • One or more years of experience practicing as a certified athletic trainer.

Essential Functions

The work of this position occurs in a typical office environment. Although infrequent, periods of heavy exertion may occur. Incumbent must have the following abilities:  

  • Communicate with students, athletic trainers, student-athletes, coaches, staff, colleagues, and medical providers.
  • Prepare, read, and understand medical documentation.
  • Operate personal computer, printer, audio visual equipment, photocopier and fax.
  • Utilize therapeutic modality equipment.
  • Demonstrate therapeutic exercise.
  • Ability to mobilize, tape, and wrap student-athletes to prevent/support injury.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs and support 200 lbs.
  • Ability to run, kneel or squat in order to evaluate and care for an injured student-athlete.
  • Stand or sit for prolonged periods of time (competition/practice coverage).
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Drive or fly to off-campus meetings, conferences, and competitions.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
