| Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The NCCU Department of Athletics’ primary purpose is to provide leadership for an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program. The NCCU Department of Athletics places the highest priority on a quality academic and athletic experience as part of the overall education of student-athletes. The Department of Athletics seeks to strengthen the integration of the athletics program objectives with academic development objectives.

| Primary Purpose of Position |
The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries as part of the University’s comprehensive sports medicine program. The position provides coverage for the athletic training room and travels with assigned athletic teams. The Assistant Athletic Trainer coordinates the prevention and management of athletic injuries, evaluates and provides appropriate care for injuries, oversees rehabilitation programs, and exercises independent judgment in assessing sports-related injuries. The position also makes appropriate referrals to physicians and other healthcare providers when necessary and works collaboratively with coaches, student-athletes, and sports medicine staff to promote the health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes.

| Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Working knowledge of the physical training demands, conditioning requirements, and injury risks associated with various team and individual sports.
- Ability to effectively assess and respond to the physical and medical needs of student-athletes.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effectively interacting with student-athletes, coaches, healthcare providers, and Athletics Department personnel.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaching staff, and administrative personnel.
- Ability to communicate medical information clearly, professionally, and appropriately while maintaining confidentiality.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced collegiate athletics environment and respond appropriately to changing medical and operational needs.

- Must hold current National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATA BOC) certification.
- Must possess or be in the process of obtaining the appropriate state licensure, certification, or registration required to practice as an athletic trainer.
- Maintains all required professional certifications and state credentials in good standing.
- Performs clinical athletic training duties in accordance with applicable professional standards, institutional policies, and state regulations.

- Assesses the health and physical condition of assigned student-athletes and identifies appropriate treatment and rehabilitation needs.
- Administers preventative treatments and post-injury care and rehabilitation throughout the year.
- Develops and implements individualized treatment and rehabilitation plans for assigned student-athletes.
- Determines appropriate medical care and intervention based on the nature and severity of injuries.
- Provides emergency first aid and immediate care for injured student-athletes as needed.
- Coordinates and facilitates the safe transportation of injured student-athletes when necessary.
- Monitors student-athlete progress throughout treatment and rehabilitation and adjusts care as appropriate.

- Provides daily athletic training coverage for assigned sports, including practices and home and away competitions.
- Provides on-site medical support and injury management during practices and competitions.
- Counsels injured or ill student-athletes regarding treatment, recovery, rehabilitation, and return-to-play expectations.
- Communicates with parents and guardians of student-athletes regarding injuries, illnesses, treatment plans, and recovery as appropriate.
- Coordinates medical appointments, diagnostic testing, and specialist referrals for injured or ill student-athletes.
- Follows up with medical providers regarding evaluation and diagnostic test results.
- Maintains appropriate documentation of medical evaluations, treatments, referrals, and follow-up care.

- Travels with assigned athletic teams for away competitions and provides athletic training and sports medicine support as needed.
- Coordinates medical coverage and necessary athletic training resources for away trips.
- Assists with the transportation and management of medical supplies and equipment during team travel.
