Job Summary
The Director of Football Operations / Defensive Assistant is responsible for managing the daily operational, administrative, and logistical functions of the football program while also contributing to defensive coaching, game preparation, and player development. This role ensures the program operates efficiently on and off the field while supporting the defensive staff in practice planning, film analysis, and game-day execution.
Job Description
Primary Responsibilities
Football Operations (Director of Operations)
Oversee daily operations of the football program, including scheduling, logistics, and coordination
Coordinate team travel, lodging, meals, and transportation
Manage practice schedules, facility usage, and equipment logistics
Serve as liaison between coaching staff, athletic administration, academic services, and support staff
Assist with budget tracking, purchasing, and inventory management
Coordinate compliance-related documentation as required by league, conference, or school policies
Organize team events, meetings, camps, clinics, and community outreach initiatives
Supervise student assistants, interns, or support staff (if applicable)
Ensure smooth game-day operations, including setup, sideline organization, and post-game logistics
Defensive Coaching Responsibilities
Assist the defensive coordinator with game planning and weekly preparation
Coach a designated defensive position group (e.g., linebackers, defensive backs, defensive line)
Conduct film breakdown, opponent scouting, and tendency analysis
Assist with practice planning, drills, and installation of defensive schemes
Provide on-field coaching during practices and games
Support player development through position meetings, technique instruction, and performance evaluation
Assist with defensive playbook organization and updates
Recruiting & Player Support
Assist with recruiting logistics, including visits, communication coordination, and evaluations
Help maintain recruiting databases and prospect information
Support player development off the field, including leadership development and accountability
Communicate expectations related to academics, conduct, and team culture
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
Strong understanding of football operations and defensive concepts
Coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, or equivalent level
Excellent organizational, communication, and time-management skills
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency with film software, scouting tools, and basic office technology
Knowledge of NCAA Division I and FCS rules and operating procedures
Strong Organizational, Communication, and Leadership skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-pressure environment
Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the football schedule
Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see, and hear to perform essential functions.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior D1 Experience
Previous experience as a Director of Football Operations or Assistant Coach
Defensive coaching or playing background
Recruiting experience (college level)
Leadership experience supervising staff or student assistants
