Job Title

Assistant Coach, Rowing

Job Summary

Assist with all aspects of running and coaching the women's rowing program. This includes but is not limited to recruiting, coaching varsity and walk-on athletes, fundraising, administrative duties, and equipment maintenance and repair. Together with the head coach and other assistant, you'll be responsible for ensuring the successful development of the women's rowing team, and all that it entails.

Essential Responsibilities

• Coaching Novice and Varsity athletes. Planning and executing water and land practice for both groups based on skillset and needs of each individual group.
• Recruit athletes - both rowers and out of sport, and on and off campus. Visit practices of local sports teams (rowing and other sports) as well as out of region rowing teams to identify and recruit prospects.
• Manage equipment upkeep and repair. This includes boats, launches, oars, ergs, technology, etc. Develop a systematic plan to ensure all equipment is being maintained and replaced on a schedule and is in top working order.
• Administrative work. Includes compliance work, fundraising, alumni outreach, planning,

Experience and Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of collegiate rowing coaching, competitive rowing, or related athletics experience.

Skills/Abilities

• Demonstrated knowledge of rowing techniques, training methodologies, and athlete development.
• Experience recruiting and retaining student-athletes preferred.
• Experience working with student-athletes in a collegiate or competitive athletics environment preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to support the academic, athletic, and personal development of student-athletes.
• Experience with equipment maintenance, practice planning, and team operations preferred.
• Knowledge of NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, student-athletes, alumni, and campus partners.
• Ability to motivate and mentor student-athletes from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, travel, and attend team events as required.
• Ability to safely operate rowing equipment and support on-water training activities.

Licenses & Certifications:

Valid driver’s license required. CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

1. Please develop a one (1) page or less “recruiting plan” using a budget of $10,000/year. Each year you have access to 2 full scholarships ($160,000 split up however you like). Our current roster size is 50-55 and we’d like to maintain that. Our team depth has become a strength but we’re still lacking top end speed and size for our 1V8+ - please be sure to specifically address this in the recruiting plan.

2. You are in charge of our erg "fleet". We have 35 2-15 year-old ergs on campus and 8 15-year old ergs at the Boathouse. We also have 6 15-year-old ergs that aren’t working for various reasons. Please put together a 5-year plan to maintain/develop the erg fleet in top condition. You have access to $2000/year for this and we’d like to have 55 working ergs (45 on campus, 10 at the boathouse).

3. Go through our Saint Mary’s rowing website (https://smcgaels.com/sports/womens-rowing) and list (bullet point or “note” style is fine, doesn’t need to be full sentences) the changes/improvements you’d work with our external team to make to improve our website.
