The Assistant Director/Associate Director of Sports Medicine provides comprehensive athletic training services for assigned NCAA Division I student-athletes, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play management. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Care
Perform injury and illness prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation for assigned student-athletes.
Provide on-site medical coverage for practices, competitions, training sessions, and team travel.
Design and implement rehabilitation programs.
Apply preventive taping, bracing, and protective equipment.
Administer therapeutic modalities and manual interventions.
Maintain medical documentation in accordance with NCAA, HIPAA, and institutional standards.
Coordinate care with team physicians and specialists.
Coordinate transportation for medical appointments and diagnostic testing.
Student-Athlete Health & Wellness
Educate student-athletes and staff on injury prevention and risk management.
Coordinate communication regarding medical evaluations, treatment plans, and return-to-play decisions.
Assist with nutritional and mental health referrals and follow-up.
Participate in interdisciplinary wellness and performance initiatives.
Department Operations
Assist with inventory management, medical equipment maintenance, and EMR administration.
Participate in policy review and updates.
Serve on the Pre-existing Injury Review Committee.
Maintain required certifications and licensure.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities by Level:
Assistant Director, Sports Medicine
Assist with supervision and evaluation of Athletic Training Fellows.
Mentor assigned athletic trainers, fellows, students, and student assistants.
Assist with fellow education curriculum delivery.
Assist with recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of sports medicine staff.
Assist with emergency management operations, EAP reviews, emergency equipment compliance, and record maintenance.
Participate in senior staff initiatives and department projects.
Associate Director, Sports Medicine
Supervise and conduct performance evaluations of Athletic Training Fellows.
Lead delivery of the athletic training fellow education curriculum.
Provide leadership in recruitment, hiring, and onboarding efforts.
Co-coordinate emergency management operations, annual reviews, EAP development, and post-incident assessments.
Manage CPR certification tracking and compliance.
Collaborate on budget oversight for medical equipment and supplies.
Serve as a senior-level contributor to departmental strategic initiatives and wellness programming.
Assistant Director
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant area and four (4) years of appropriate experience; OR Master's Degree in a relevant area and two (2) years of appropriate experience.
Associate Director
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant area and six (6) years of collegiate experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer; OR Master's Degree in a relevant area and four (4) years of collegiate experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer.
Required Certifications/Licensure
BOC Certification
CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
Tennessee Athletic Training Licensure (or eligibility within 90 days)
Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
Assistant Director: Full-time collegiate athletic training experience.
Associate Director: Full-time NCAA Division I athletic training experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must be able to comply with all Athletic Department, University, Board of Trustees, NCAA, and Athletic conference policies and procedures.
