Job Description Summary

Miami University is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Assistant Track and Field Coach to contribute to the success of our sprints, hurdles, and jumping programs. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work directly with the Head Coach in all aspects of coaching, recruiting, and program administration, while also working under the general guidance of the Head Cross Country Coach. The successful candidate will play a vital role in the development of our student-athletes, with a specific focus on our developmental athletes, and will contribute to enhancing our training and team culture. This role will also provide valuable experience in meet management.

Job Description

Essential Duties

• Coaching and Mentoring: Provide expert coaching, instruction, and mentorship to student-athletes in the sprints, hurdles, and/or jumping events daily during practices and competitions. Foster a positive and competitive training environment focused on athletic and personal growth. Specifically focus on the coaching and development of less experienced student-athletes within the sprints, hurdles, and jumping events, designing and implementing individualized training plans to foster their growth and potential.
• Recruitment: Actively participate in the identification, evaluation, and recruitment of prospective student-athletes who align with the academic and athletic standards of Miami University. Dedicate time to the recruitment of prospective student-athletes in the sprints, hurdles, and jumping events. Maintain thorough recruiting records and build relationships with prospective athletes and their families.
• Practice Management: Assist in the coordination, supervision, and detailed documentation of daily practice sessions, ensuring efficient and effective training plans. Collaborate closely with the Head Coach to develop and implement innovative training methodologies for the sprints, hurdles, and jumps groups, contributing ideas to enhance athlete performance.
• Administrative Support: Provide administrative assistance to the Head Coach and the Director of Cross Country/Track and Field on various tasks, including team travel, equipment management, and alumni relations initiatives.
• Meet Management: Take a lead role in the planning and hosting of all home cross-country meets and outdoor track and field meets, gaining valuable experience as meet director. This includes coordinating logistics, managing volunteers, and ensuring smooth event operations.
• Communication and Collaboration: Work and communicate effectively and professionally with student-athletes, fellow coaches (including the Head Cross Country Coach and Throws Assistant Coach), athletic administrators, support staff (academic advisors, trainers, strength & conditioning), and university employees across campus.
• NCAA and University Compliance: Assist the Head Coach and the Director of Cross Country/Track & Field in ensuring the program operates in full compliance with all NCAA, Mid-American Conference, and university rules and regulations.
• Compliance and Eligibility: Attend all required meetings, maintain accurate records related to recruiting and playing/practice seasons, monitor the academic eligibility of student-athletes, successfully complete NCAA Certification tests, and contribute to the education of student-athletes regarding NCAA regulations.
• Liaison Roles: Serve as a liaison between the track and field program and academic advisors, athletic trainers, and the strength and conditioning staff to ensure comprehensive support for student-athletes.
• Program Representation: Represent the Miami University track and field program positively through public speaking engagements and participation in community service projects. Actively contribute to building and maintaining a positive, supportive, and high-performance team culture within the sprints, hurdles, and jumps group, fostering strong relationships and a dedicated work ethic.
• Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, the Director of Cross Country/Track & Field, and/or athletic administration

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree
• Valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience coaching the sprints, hurdles, and/or jumping events at the high school or collegiate level

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
