Introduction:

The Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Success provides leadership and oversight on a variety of support services for student-athletes and leads strategic planning, policy and procedure implementation, and oversight. The Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Success is a key position on the senior athletics leadership team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for the direction and coordination of Student-Athlete Success. Provides leadership for Student-Athlete Success including but not limited to admissions, student housing, financial aid, supplemental meals, scholarship administration, student-athlete development and advocacy, athletic training, mental health, strength and conditioning, and oversees departmental compliance with NCAA and affiliated conference rules and regulations.
2. Oversees and enhances the student-athlete experience through the delivery of comprehensive support services and developmental programming, including community service, career planning, personal development, and leadership initiatives, ensuring student-athlete well-being is addressed in accordance with University policies and procedures.
3. Provides senior-level leadership, guidance and administrative support to coaches and sport programs as assigned by the Athletics Director to promote academic success, staff and coach professional development, competitive excellence, and overall program effectiveness.
4. As assigned by the Athletics Director, serves as Sports Administrator of assigned sports programs to provide leadership and counsel to coaches on a broad range of daily, on-going and annual administrative services of assigned sports while ensuring excellent academic and competitive performance. Conducts annual performance evaluations and end of season evaluations.
5. Participates in the development and implementation of the Athletic Department’s vision and mission. Establishes departmental policies and procedures, and engages in long-range planning as an integral member of the Department’s senior leadership team.
6. Serves as liaison between the Athletic Department and key campus partners, including Student-Athlete Academic Services, the Faculty Athletics Representative, Title IX Office, and various units within the Office of Student Affairs (e.g. Admissions, Financial Aid, Judicial Affairs, Registrar, Housing, Health Services, etc.), cultivating collaborative relationships and coordinating support service for student-athletes.
7. Implements and monitors academic oversight structures to support and maintain strong Academic Progress Rates (APR), retention, and graduation outcomes for student-athletes.
8. Serves as part of the Department’s emergency response structure for incidents involving student-athletes and/or coaches, including in cases of emergency and crisis that occur during non-business hours.
9. Supports the vision and mission of the Athletics Director in developing reports and presentations and providing written and oral testimony to various governing entities including but not limited to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, the Hawaii State Legislature, UH Foundation, and fundraising events.
10. Assesses program effectiveness and consistency with the University’s programs and goals and institutes changes for improvement.
11. Cultivates effective partnerships with peers throughout the University by sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.
12. Adheres to applicable laws, regulations, and policies and procedures of the University, raises awareness among staff, and directs them in such a way that University compliance requirements are met.
13. Identifies and mitigates through policy development/revision/enhancement and training, areas of risk and developing risk to the University, e.g., legal, financial, reputation, and compliance risk, and ensure team is aware and focused on addressing same.
14. Fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment and maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators, staff, coaches, campus partners, media, donors, business leaders, and elected officials.
15. Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
16. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information in accordance with federal and state law and University policies, including but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess.
17. Knows, recognizes and complies with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University and its employees, the rules of the NCAA and affiliated Conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.
18. Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there are reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others, have occurred or will occur.
19. Other duties as directed.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in sports management, athletics administration, physical education, recreation, education or related field from an accredited college or university.
2. Three (3) years of athletic administrative or head coaching experience at the Division I collegiate level or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
3. Demonstrated strong administrative, communications, and interpersonal skills.
4. Demonstrated commitment to thorough understanding of, and implementation of programs and procedures to ensure full compliance with the NCAA, conference and institutional rules, regulation, and procedures.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of the role of intercollegiate athletics as part of a university educational experience.
6. Demonstrated commitment to student-athlete academically and athletically.
7. Excellent written and oral communication skills;
8. Demonstrated ability to effectively organize, manage and supervise a department unit;
9. Ability to comprehend and interpret administrative directives and guidance to ensure IT operations align with organizational standards and industry best practices;
10. Knowledge of rules and regulations government in intercollegiate athletics as well as knowledge of overall student-athlete experience;
11. Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, performance driven environment.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Master’s degree in business administration or other related field; or terminal degree from an accredited college or university;
2. Experience working directly with student-athletes.
