Required Qualifications:
For Social Workers : A Master of Social Work degree (foreign equivalent or higher). LCSW license in New York State or eligible for NY licensure within 6 months of hire.
For Licensed Mental Health Counselors : A Master of Mental Health Counseling degree or related discipline. LMHC license in New York State or eligible for NY licensure within 6 months of hire.

Four (4) years of full-time experience in counseling. Experience in a collegiate or professional athletic setting.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in sports psychology. Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) or Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) education and credentialing. Experience in athletic counseling or sports performance mental health. Experience within a Division 1 athletics department. Experience as a college athlete. Understanding of NCAA Compliance Rules (played a Division I, II or III sport, coached in collegiate athletics or as a staff member in a collegiate athletic program).

Brief Description of Duties:
The Stony Brook University Sports Performance Counselor supports the Stony Brook University Athletics Department’s mission by providing comprehensive mental health and performance psychology services to student-athletes. This position will provide clinical counseling and performance-based consultations, team talks, and education to promote the emotional well-being, athletic performance, and overall personal development of student-athletes.
Responsibilities also include crisis intervention, outreach programming, and contributing to a culture of wellness and inclusion within the athletics community.
This role requires specialized expertise in sport psychology, cultural competency, and the ability to support a diverse student-athlete population. Working closely with diverse stakeholders, the individual ensures the holistic development of student-athletes to achieve their athletic, academic and personal goals. 

Clinical

• Provide individual and group clinical counseling services to student-athletes, addressing concerns that affect students’ athletic performance and other areas of their lives.
• Help athletes, sports teams, and coaches mentally prepare for competition.
• Collaborate with coaches, athletes, and teams to develop mental strategies for improving focus, managing stress, and sustaining motivation throughout competitive performance.
• Participate in crisis intervention and after-hours on-call coverage as needed.
• Complete all clinical documentation per CAPS policy and procedure, and follow NY state rules and regulations.

Training and Programming

• Work closely with coaches and athletic trainers to develop plans to enhance an athlete’s mental resilience and overall well-being.
• Facilitate evidence-based interventions (e.g., Team talks, etc.) to strengthen team dynamics, improve communication, and foster a supportive, high-performing team culture.
• Contribute to the yearly education event sponsored for the student athletes.
• Manage day-to-day operations and provide supervision to the “Beyond the Game” Athletics peer education program. 

Administration

• Coordinate a clinical schedule that ensures student athletes receive high quality and prompt care.
• Oversee the coordination of referrals and care with clinical counselors and team physicians.
• Complete records punctually according to record keeping/report writing, CAPS policy & procedures required by legal and ethical regulations.
• Assess an athlete’s mental response to their sport in practice and team environment.
• Participate in bi-weekly meetings with the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine and Director of Athletics Mental Health.

Divisional and Campus Partnerships

• Participate in Athletics Department staff meetings.
• Participate in opportunities that promote your learning, growth, and development (i.e. classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.).
• Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of your individual unit/department (i.e. campus wide traditions, events, programs, etc.).
• Collaborate with divisional and campus partners including, but not limited to CAPS, Student Accessibility Support center (SASC), and Student Support team.

Campus Events

• Work with University partners to incorporate student athletes into campus initiatives and events.
• Actively participate in a range of outreach and prevention programs such as “BTG”, injury support group, and SBU 101 courses.

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Evening and weekend work may be required at times.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
