Job Purpose

Reporting to the Athletic Director, the Director of Golf serves as the public face of Winthrop’s NCAA
Division I men’s and women’s golf programs and is responsible for recruiting and developing high-level student-athletes to succeed athletically and academically; overseeing and managing the teams’ administrative functions; and assisting with team and department promotion and fundraising activities. 

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.
• At least 10 years of experience coaching intercollegiate golf.
• Experience managing all aspects of an intercollegiate golf program.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree.
• Supervisory experience.
• Proven ability to fundraise and successfully cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, alumni, event partners and other external organizations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Summary

• Thorough knowledge and understanding of NCAA and Big South Conference rules and regulations and the ability to apply them correctly and consistently.
• Ability to successfully recruit and coach student-athletes to compete at the NCAA Division I level and beyond.

• Sufficient computer skills to perform job.
• Demonstrated commitment to high academic standards and the ability and willingness to develop student-athletes academically and professionally.

Job Summary

Coaching & Player Development
Serves as head coach of the Men’s Golf team:

• Teaches skills, techniques and game strategy.
• Conducts regular one-to-one meetings with team members to review performance metrics, academic standing and personal and professional development goals.
• Coordinates video review and film sessions.
• Recruits top-quality athletes.

Administration
Oversees and manages all operational and strategic functions of the Men’s and Women’s Golf programs:

• Manages and provides financial oversight of annual budgets, purchasing, and team and recruiting travel.
• Oversees facility access and the scheduling of practices, tournaments and other events.
• Supervises, mentors and evaluates head coach and support personnel.
• Establishes program standards and training philosophy.
• Provides a framework for recruiting high-level student-athletes in accordance with NCAA rules and regulations.
• Designs and executes a comprehensive student-athlete development model that integrates fundamentals, performance data, course management, competitive readiness, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, nutrition, recovery strategies, technology and ongoing evaluation, goal setting and progress tracking.

Compliance & Academics

• Ensures all program activities strictly adhere to NCAA, Big South Conference and university rules, policies and procedures.
• Maintains accurate documentation, CARA logs, countable hours and reporting in collaboration with compliance staff.
• Ensures staff and student-athletes complete national, conference and university compliance training, as required.
• Promotes a culture that prioritizes academic achievement and graduation as a core competitive pillar.
• Coordinates with academic services to support eligibility, academic progress, class planning/scheduling and graduation success and implements structured academic accountability systems, including study hall expectations, tutoring integration and assignment tracking, as needed.
• Leads strategic planning and long-range roster and scholarship management to sustain championship-level success.

External Relations

• Represents both golf programs with professional integrity.
• Builds and maintains strong campus and external relationships with administration, donors, alumni, PGA/LPGA teaching professionals, sport science, NIL and other partners, and members of the broader golf industry.
• Supports NIL education, brand-building guidance and external partnership opportunities for student-athletes in accordance with institutional guidelines.
• Spearheads stewardship and fundraising efforts in collaboration with athletics and university development staff.
• Oversees public relations, branding, marketing exposure, social media content and community engagement in partnership with athletic communications and marketing staff.
• Speaks at clinics, banquets and other events to elevate the profile and reach of the programs.

Travel/Overtime Requirements

Extensive travel and evening and weekend work.

Telecommuting

Employees are not eligible for telecommuting/remote work during their 12-month probationary period. After that time, certain positions may be eligible for telecommuting/remote work at the discretion of the supervisor and in accordance with Winthrop policies.
