Position Summary
The Head Competitive Cheer and Dance Coach at Upper Iowa University reports to the Associate AD/Director of Athletic Development and is responsible for planning, directing, and evaluating all aspects and facets of a successful Competitive Cheer and Dance program. Duties include, but not limited to: recruitment of highly skilled and academically qualified student-athletes, monitor academic progress and eligibility, and effectively analyze and teach the fundamentals skills and strategies of the sport. Plan, organize, conduct, and evaluate practices session along with develop, implement, and evaluate gameday routines, choreography and fan engagement strategies. Serve as a leader, mentor, and role-model to the student-athletes of the program. Prepare competitive team schedule, participate in public relations/media activities, and fundraising initiatives.
Oversee team travel coordination and other administrative processes and procedures. Prepare, monitor, and manage team budget. Select, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches. Ensure compliance with all Department, University, NCAA, and other governing body policies, procedures, and regulations.
Position Responsibilities
Direct and supervise the overall planning and execution of the intercollegiate competitive cheer and dance program.
Promote the philosophy and objectives of the competitive cheer and dance program, the intercollegiate athletic department, and University.
Serve as a leader, mentor, and role model to the student-athletes of the competitive cheer and dance program.
Identify, evaluate, and recruit highly skilled and academically qualified student-athletes.
Monitor academic progress and eligibility status of team members and implementing action plans and counseling as necessary.
Effectively analyze, choreograph, and teach the fundamental skills and routines for an intercollegiate competitive cheer program.
Plan, organize, conduct, and evaluate practice sessions.
Develop, implement, and evaluate game plans, strategies, and in-game adjustments.
Observe, supervise, and coach team at competitive cheer competitions, UIU home football & basketball games, select away games, and other University sponsored events or public relations activities as scheduled.
Oversee the strength and conditioning program for student-athletes of the competitive cheer program.
Counsel and mentor team members in disciplinary, conduct, and personal matters.
Participate in public relations activities to include media interviews, press conferences, and other public appearances.
Assist with fundraising initiatives for the competitive cheer program and Department of Athletics, in consultation with the Office of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Development.
Oversee the coordination of team travel arrangement and logistics.
Responsible for individual and staff in adhering to the policies, procedures, and regulations of the University, Department of Athletics, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), GLVC, Universal Cheer Association (UCA), or any other governing body.
Coordinate and work with the Office of Admissions in the recruitment of potential student-athletes and campus visits.
Oversee the management and purchase of team related equipment and uniforms.
Prepare, monitor, and manage team budget.
Responsible for all administrative processes and procedures as it relates to the competitive cheer program.
Select, direct, supervise, and assistant coaches, including volunteers.
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to operate computer and associated software.
Attend department meetings and disseminate information to assistant coaches as necessary.
Promote a spirit of cooperation and partnership among competitive cheer program and University club dance team.
Observe and evaluate the entire competitive cheer program and make recommendations to the Director of Athletics.
Management of collegiate mascot program and appropriate appearances.
Perform any and all duties as may be required or assigned by the Director of Athletics, to include additional administrative role.
Working of nights and weekends around regularly scheduled athletic events.
Lifting, pulling, pushing and moving of objects over 50 pounds.
Periods of prolonged standing.
Periods of prolonged sitting.
Noise levels associated with intercollegiate athletics.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required from accredited institution.
Minimum two (2) years coaching experience in intercollegiate competitive cheer or related experience.
American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA) Certification.
Working knowledge of UCA and NCAA rules and regulations.
Knowledge of competitive cheer and dance including techniques, strategies, and rules as they relate to performance and competition.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree is preferred but could be attained while doing this job
