The WVSU dance team (Jazzy Jackets) is an HBCU-style majorette team, a performance
tradition rooted in Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This style is distinct from hip
hop or jazz dance. It combines precision, power, and showmanship, and is characterized by
techniques such as bucking (sharp, energetic movements performed with strength and
rhythm) and high stepping (stylized marching with exaggerated leg lifts and dynamic
formations). Majorette teams are known for blending dance with marching band culture, as
well as current popular music, creating vibrant and spirited performances that are both
athletic and artistic.
The WVSU cheer team follows the stomp-shake style, which is also rooted in HBCU culture.
Unlike traditional cheerleading that emphasizes tumbling and stunts, stomp-shake cheer
focuses on strong, rhythmic stomps, sharp arm motions, and powerful chants delivered with
intensity. It is a style that prioritizes energy, crowd engagement, and cultural expression,
making it a dynamic complement to the majorette dance tradition.
