Principal accountabilities of the position include:
COACHING AND PLAYER DEVELOPMENT:
Lead and direct all phases of a successful and competitive Men’s & Women’s Golf program while modeling integrity, respect, accountability, and a strong commitment to the scholar-athlete model.
Work as a member of the team in the Whitman Athletic Department and support the goals, objectives, philosophies, policies, and procedures of the department and the college.
Create a diverse, positive, and inclusive environment for the student-athlete(s) to excel academically and athletically, aligned with Whitman College expectations and the NCAA Division III philosophy.
Create and develop an evolving, positive, diverse, and inclusive team environment that develops and allows for student-athletes to meet their full potential on the athletic field and in the academic setting.
Provide culture building, character building, and life skills (career development, leadership skills, time management, work ethic) in and out of season.
Represent the College and its athletics program, with honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship at all times, to various institutional programs and students, parents, the public, alumni, and external agencies.
Serve in an administrative capacity, along with the Director of Athletics, in the organization and coordination of the WClub Golf Outing.
Hire, supervise, and evaluate assistant coach(s).
Contribute to the department's overall atmosphere by establishing positive, collaborative working relationships with campus and departmental peers.
RECRUITMENT:
Develop and implement a comprehensive recruiting plan that demonstrates successful results in recruiting, yield, and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes in a rigorous academic environment, and students who align with Whitman's mission and core values.
Develop and implement effective recruiting strategies within the parameters of Whitman, NWC, and NCAA rules.
Manage and maintain an updated recruiting database and travel to events to recruit prospective student-athletes.
Schedule, coordinate, and supervise official and unofficial visits of prospective student-athletes.
TEAM OPERATIONS:
Oversee and monitor all budget and financial operations of the men’s and women’s programs.
Adhere to the departmental procedures related to purchasing and travel expenditures and organizes team travel organization, including vehicles, lodging, and meals.
Develop fundraising and camp programs to augment the program budget and needs.
Organize, schedule, prepare, and conduct individual and team training sessions and competitive strategies.
Make appropriate coaching decisions during competition.
Develop an effective competitive schedule for the Men’s & Women’s Golf program that falls within the budget parameters of the program and the department.
Retain student-athletes in the program and monitor student-athletes for their academic progress and needs.
Work with the sports communication director to provide current team news; manage the team's social media accounts in accordance with the college and department policies.
Work effectively with other athletic department areas, including the training room, equipment, facilities, sports communication, the business manager, and other coaches, to provide an outstanding work environment.
TEACHING:
Teach two (2) SSRA credits in an academic year.
Demonstrate effective teaching methods; excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; and willingness to work on projects with faculty, administrators, and staff.
Attend faculty and divisional meetings when not in conflict with program responsibilities.
COMPLIANCE & SAFETY:
Maintain thorough knowledge of NCAA, NWC SPMs, and institutional rules and regulations. The head coach must annually take and pass the NCAA Division III Rules Test. Report any alleged violations of NCAA, NWC, or institutional rules and regulations.
Communicate and effectively collaborate with the sports medicine staff to support the physical and mental needs of student-athletes. Collaborate with the athletic training staff on the return-to-play protocol for injured student-athletes.
OUTREACH & REPRESENTATION:
Attend all-staff and division-wide meetings and attend all NWC meetings for the program.
Develop and maintain an alumni communication plan.
Develop a positive, professional relationship with officials, league personnel, and coaching colleagues.
Assist in the coordination of special events, including recruiting, alumni, the WClub golf outing, and student athlete recognition functions.
EVOLVING RESPONSIBILITIES:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required
Successful golf coaching experience
Demonstrated knowledge of competitive golf and coaching principles.
Strong and ethical recruiting skills, organizational skills, and communication skills.
Ability to work nights, weekends, and travel as required.
Has and can maintain valid and annual certifications in: NCAA Rules test, CPR/AED, First Aid & Safety, and van driver Certification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree from an accredited institution
Head coaching experience.
Collegiate playing experience.
Experience in coaching at a high level of golf, with collegiate coaching experience
Experience playing, and/or coaching at the NCAA Division III level OR the appreciation and understanding of the NCAA
Division III philosophy and the embrace of Division III principles.
Experience in recruiting student-athletes with a strong athletic and academic profile, and the ability to be successful in an academically rigorous setting and a collegiate golf program.

Salary Range: $55,650 - $61,840
